Category D

Hi gang!

We've had a bit of rain, so this is a good time to find some tracks and make some casts. BC has send in some pictures of the rare category D, bird on nest.
Yup, It's a duck. It looks like a nest too. But how can we be sure it is really on a nest? BC is an Honest scout, so we can trust him, but this picture also helps.

Great work by BC!

Hiya Donald

This is a picture that BC brought to the meeting tonight. There was some discussion about what it was. Pheasant got a few votes, but Mr. K. seemed convinced it was a duck. So a duck it is. In any case its a nice picture. You need to get pretty close to get one like this.

Pictures of bugs

How are the pictures going? Remember, the point of the pictures is to show that you can get close enough to an animal to get its picture. This is one that JB's dad took of a dragonfly covered in morning dew. The key to this, like any picture, is knowing when animals will be around, and getting close enough without scaring them. Dragonflies are only still when asleep, so you have to get up real early for this one. They have no sense of smell, so upwind and downwind don't matter.

April Fools. JB's dad did not take this. The rules do apply however

It's always a good sign when the start grooming. It means they are relaxed and you can get closer.

Taking Pictures

Hi Scouts. This is JB's sister. RB. I wanted to show you some things about pictures. If you have good camera that zooms well, it is easy to take pictures from a long way away. My dad found a rabbit and tried to take a picture. This is what he got

Pretty lousy. The problem is that if you zoom a lot it is hard to hold the camera steady enough. Resting the camera on something, like a branch or a table is good. Even better is a tripod, like this.
Using the tripod I got this picture.

Much better, yes? This one is better still, since we zoomed out a bit, which made it easier for the camera to auto-focus.
